The sky is dark and thunderous. Unknown fire is falling from the heavens. There is a stench in the air and the path is rugged. You have been warned, “Get out! Don’t look back!”. Your clawing your way up the steep canyon path leading away from what you have become comfortable with. But there is a pull, an almost overwhelming sensation demanding, “Turn back! You will never make it!”. You pause for a minute. You want to turn back, maybe just a glance back.. maybe.. (adapted from Lot and his wife)
Will you give in or fight on? If you are not feeling the pull to return to mediocrity, it is because you are already living there. I write this as one who frequently fails.
After wise counsel from my Mentor, I have recently stepped back from a popular social networking site for personal reasons. I do occasionally browse my friends status updates. I read a post from a young man I am in business with and who I highly respect. He is a leader who is setting an unprecedented standard. He posted:
Every time I make a plan to get a lot done and move forward with goals to help people, I meet some of the worst temptations and setbacks ever. I’ve come to realize that whenever I am tempted in some way, I’m almost always en route to get something important and impactful done. God, help me to push through and have victory in You! ~ Zack Frey
I found this very genuine and honest. It is rare for someone in leadership to be so humble in his journey. There is a temptation for those of us in leadership to portray having it all together. Zack Frey also knows where to find his strength.
Yeah, but why the Bible?
A man does not call a line crooked unless he has some idea of a straight line.~ C.S. Lewis
It doesn’t take long to realize that our world can be a dark place. There is a fiber in our humanness that tells a tale of how evil we can be. To be better, to attain greatness.. we must compare ourselves to something beyond ourselves. To not believe God is the ultimate authority on morality is to not believe in Life itself. Without a moral standard there is no reason or measure of greatness. That is why I refer to the Bible. Its the base. The path.
There are amazing encouragements for us to keep fighting. To press on and finish strong.
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.
1 Timothy 6:12
Fight the good fight of the faith.
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
1 corinthians 15:34
Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning..
1 corinthians 10:13
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
The Lies We Believe
“Ill never be in leadership. Im just me, nobody cares what I do. Its not like Im going to be a politician or something” How many times has someone thought this only to be embarrassed years later by the past.
“In our life there is no replay but it is being recorded“~ Chris Brady
Someone is always watching you. Waiting for you to fall or waiting for you to succeed. Don’t waste time. Life is bigger than just you. There are many people looking for answers to life’s issues. You have the power to influence but you must be trustworthy. Your eyes are the window to your soul (Mathew 6:22-23). Others can sense when you are two faced and cultivating a heart of wickedness. Save your mind by the repetition of Gods word. Most of our struggle is self induced. Deny yourself of the endless spiral of self indulgence. There is no satisfaction and it only reinforces a desperate and dark feeling. Choose right today.
You will never have public victories until you have private victories. ~ Orrin Woodward
So how will we be remembered? Will we do things worth writing about? Our lives are changing because of Gods provision of leadership materials and godly mentors in our lives. Finish Strong!
